The Dragon Gate Longmen Grotto & the Origina of Taiji Quan
Taijiquan is a martial art that has its origina tracing back its DNA to 30,000 years. Its history is steeped in politics and mysticism. Every teacher seems to have a slightly different version of history that elevates their style and philosophy. By sifting through some of the mire and we can arrive at an overview of both the mythic and historical truth of its evolution.
The mythic origin begins with the Shamana's at Siberia in their imitation of the animal spirits and their movement during their rituals and sacred dances, the calling of the Siberian Sand Crane, the tumbling and fumbling of the cave bear or the roar of the sabra tooth tigers have become intrinsinic to the Taiji form, hence, the Taiji moves of Snow Crane flashing its wing, the Tiger returns to the mountain, the orangutan recreating...all can be traced back to its Neolithic shamanistic beginning.
Maybe to some sinologist that might seem far fetch without written or archeological evidence, however, in its dynamic dance movement, as a choreographer, I can trace them back to its origin by comparing the different scared dance tradition between the Native American's bear dance, the white buffalo ghost dance to the Taiji moves, I have come to witness the shared genetic structures between this two diverse cultures, separated by 30,000 years of history. How and why that they resemble each other is quite intriguingly as a cultural genome between the two ancient cultures. The date of 30,000 years is due to the fact that the Siberian Strait that formed between Siberia and the Americas only existed in that time period.
From the Yellow Emperor's Treatise on interior medicine, he spoke of the ancient healing dance for the old folks this is very similar to the healing dance of the Apache Native American of the Buffalo Dance. Here is clear indication of the healing effects attributed to specific movements that are utilized by the shamans and medicine women of the tribes. As an aside, the Yellow Emperor is from the Bear tribe of the ancient China.
Over this long extended period of millennium, in China, Taiji Quan started to accumulated more and more martial veneer in order to pass down to simple village peasants who must learned the martial art to battle their local fuels among different villages with each village adhering to their share common family name, as in the Chen village, or the Yang village. In essence, each village of thousands of dwellers are progeny of the original pair of parents. Thus the Chen village acquired the Taiji Quan as a form of deadly martial art in order to defend themselves against bandits and other local fuel between outsiders.
This indeed fortunate, for having the villagers to carry on the ancient sacred dance form in the disguise of battle skill, thus allowing the survival of this sacred dance whereas in the tragic disappearnece of the Native American sacred dance, it has been long suppressed to only a few elders, and fortunately, in the 2019 there is a revival of such ancient cultivation among the different tribes.
